Tips from my interview with Entrepreneur.com on how to start a side hustle

This morning, Entrepreneur.com published an article about how I built my resume writing business from scratch into a $400,000 company. Here are some of the tips I shared in the article about how to start a successful side hustle.

  1. Explain how you as a freelancer deliver value to your clients. When people hire a resume writer, they are investing in themselves. A strong resume can shorten the job search by weeks and secure a $10,000 higher starting salary (or more). With dividends like that, the investment in a resume writer more than pays for itself.

  2. When you launch a new side hustle on a platform like Fiverr or Upwork, attract your first clients by starting with low pricing. Deliver excellent work to build a record of quality service and then scale up your prices from there.

  3. Politely request reviews from clients. It’s not enough for a client to happily accept your service delivery on a platform like Fiverr. If you want to maximize the ranking of your gig service in the platform’s algorithms, your clients need to leave reviews and rate your service. (Ideally, with five stars!) Those reviews create a positive feedback loop of more exposure, more orders, and more reviews, which then elevates your services above the competition.

  4. Start today. To anyone thinking about launching a side hustle, my concluding advice in the article is to just get started. That perfect “someday” when all the stars align will never come. Start small, but start today. You’ll make mistakes along the way and refine your practice and never stop learning. Everyone has a superpower that others value. Figure out what yours is, and you’ll be on your way.
